Different labs use different companies to sequence their DNA. In 2017, the Cook Lab uses Eton Bioscience, and the Strahl and Kuhlman Labs use Eurofins/Operon (purchasing the appropriate tubes through Fisher). No matter which company you use, each order requires a specific P.O. number, available on the ordering sheets prepared by the lab manager.
Another option for DNA sequencing is Genewiz. Please consider using them only after talking to Jeff.
Eton Bioscience
Go to etonbio.com. Log in with username: cooklabordering@gmail.com; the password can be obtained from your lab manager. Record each order, including the price. Create your P.O. number by adding your initials to the suffix of the P.O. number.
When ordering, add your own email address in response to the question “Also send results to others?” This way, the sequence will be sent directly to you. Also answer yes to “Send order confirmation email to yourself?” and “Send results to yourself?” Do not ever delete anything in the cooklabordering gmail account.
The Eton dropbox is upstairs in Bay 4070F. Sequences for samples left there by 11:00 a.m. will be available by 7:00 p.m. the same day. This is the “express” option. The final sample pickup time for sequences to be available the next day is 4:30 p.m.
Oligo orders are generally delivered to our lab the day after they are placed. There are no shipping charges, and therefore no need to order in batches.
Fisher
The order number for Eurofins/Operon tubes from Fisher is #DNAPBC96.
Eurofins/Operon
Eurofins and Operon have merged and thus have a joint website. It may seem tricky to navigate since there are two different “home” pages.
Eurofins offers a free Overnight Kit for DNA sequencing reactions. These overnight kits contain UPS next day shipping envelopes so you can receive your results in 24 hours.
To order free shipping materials:
- Go to operon.com. Log in.
- Click on the big “Products and Services” tab at the top left of the screen.
- In the “DNA Sequencing” category, under “Supplies”, you should see “Free Shipping Kit”. That link will take you to the ordering page.
- Select 2 for the quantity of orders you want and add them to your cart. Ideally, you would be able to order 10 or so, but for now go back to the “Products and Services” tab and repeat the process to add a few orders to your cart.
- When you are ready to check out, if you are not already on the Cart screen, click the Cart tab in the top right of the screen. Then click the “Sequencing Cart” option, and if you are not seeing your items, follow their link to “view other assorted items” in your cart.
- Click checkout in the bottom right corner.
- Make sure the shipping and billing address are correct. They should be, but make sure that the shipment goes to the Bay and not to a Room. Click “Next” to go to the Preferences tab.
- You should not have to select anything on this tab. Make sure that the additional email notification goes to jbbridge@live.unc.edu. Click next.
- Select “Purchase Order” for the payment method. It should be the default. Click checkout. You can then logout.
