Laboratory Registration

The laboratory registration process can be completed online.

  1. Go to https://ehs.cloudapps.unc.edu/LabRadWorker. (Alternatively, you can navigate to ehs.unc.edu, click the tab that says Laboratory, and scroll down to the Worker Registration Login link on the lower right of that page.) Undergraduates should select Laboratory Only.
  2. Enter the following information on the next page:
Employer: University of North Carolina (select this option by clicking it)
    Position Title: varies
    Department Name: Biochemistry and Biophysics
    Campus Box Number: 7260
Telephone #: 919-843-3935 (for the Cook and Strahl Labs) or 919-537-3268 (for the Kuhlman Lab)
Principal Investigator (PI): For example, Brain Strahl, Brian Kuhlman, or Jean Cook
  1. Click Continue. At the top of the next page you should select Genetic Medicine Building. Enter your PI’s name into the boxes for your supervisor’s first and last name. You will then have the option of selecting the types of hazardous materials with which you will be working. Make sure that you at least check the box next to Hazardous Chemicals. If you do not, you will not be able to finish the registration. Click Continue.
  2. Now you must go here (https://ehs.cloudapps.unc.edu/LabSafetyPlan/) and complete the Lab Safety Plan (LSP) annual review. Even though you have just registered, you have to do this now, and then again every year. Each Lab Safety Plan can be viewed online. Also, a hard copy of both the Laboratory Safety Manual and the Radiation Safety Manual are available in each of the Cook, Kuhlman, and Strahl labs as well.
  3. Everyone must complete the Laboratory Orientation and Hazardous Waste modules and any other modules relevant to your work (see below). No module is registered as completed until you take the exam at the end.

Laboratory Orientation

The Laboratory Orientation is available here. The lab manager will receive a notice when you complete the exam. The Laboratory Orientation is mandatory for all new lab workers.

Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste training is available here. This module is also required.

Autoclave

You will certainly use the department’s autoclaves at some point. Autoclave training is available hereThis module is required for all work-study students working in the Cook, Kuhlman, and Strahl labs.

Radiation Safety

If you will be using radioactivity in your experiments, you must complete the radiation safety module, which is available here.

Bloodborne Pathogens

The bloodborne pathogens training, available here, is for lab workers who handle human source material such as cell lines and blood.

Biosafety Level 2

All individuals working in Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratories must complete this module before beginning work with infectious materials. A laboratory is designated BSL-2 when the biological materials used in that laboratory are in Risk Group 2 (or higher in some cases) or are of primate origin. The Biosafety Level 2 training is available here.

Others

You will find a full list of other available training modules here. Complete every module relevant to your work.
