Each printer in our labs has a white label with the IP address printed on it. To connect to a printer, go to your computer’s printer settings and add a new printer using this IP address. Follow the directions below under the appropriate sub-heading depending on your computer’s operating system. If you have any problems utilizing these directions, please call the UNC Information Technology Services (ITS) Helpdesk at 919-962-HELP.

Mac OS X

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Select Printers and Scanners.
  3. Click the + button on the bottom left of the printers list. (Enter your Mac password if necessary.)
  4. Click the IP tab in the top left of the window.
  5. Enter the IP address in the address bar and click Add.
  6. The printer should now be available.

Windows 10

  1. Click the start button and type Advanced print.
  2. Choose Advanced Printer Setup.
  3. If the printer is listed, select it. The printer should then be available.
  4. If not, select The printer that I want isn’t listed.
  5. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  6. Select TCP/IP Device from the Device type dropdown.
  7. Enter the IP address.
  8. The printer should now be available.
  9. If it is not, go to the website of the printer manufacturer and download the driver of your printer to your computer and repeats steps one through seven. The printer should now be available.

Windows 8

  1. Move your mouse to the bottom right corner, then click search and type “control panel”.
  2. Go to Hardware and Sound, then click Advanced printer setup under the “Devices and Printers” category.
  3. Click the Next button on the popup window that searches for printers automatically. If the printer is found, select it and the printer should then be available.
  4. If not, add the printer manually by selecting Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  5. Select Custom and click settings.
  6. Type in the IP address.
  7. Use the Raw protocol. If the printer is not working, repeat this process but select LPR.
  8. Select the correct driver based on the model of your printer.
  9. Proceed with the default settings until you are finished.
  10. If the printer is still not available, go to the website of the printer manufacturer and download the driver of your printer to your computer and repeats steps one through nine. The printer should now be available.

Windows 7

  1. Click the start button and type print.
  2. Click Add a printer.
  3. Choose Add local printer.
  4. Click the bullet that says Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port from the dropdown menu.
  5. Enter the IP address (the port name should match).
  6. Choose the driver that corresponds with the printer model and install the driver.
  7. Select Use the driver that is currently installed.
  8. Finish the remaining steps with the default settings and click Finish.
